Orbik Have Got It Under Control

With ever-increasing pressure on businesses to provide employees with a pleasant working environment whilst maintaining or even reducing energy costs, there is an increased demand for more versatile lighting controls.  Orbik are able to supply a range of standard lighting controls and can even produce bespoke solutions manufactured in our UK facilities.  Here is an overview of the solutions Orbik can offer...

Microwave Detectors
A microwave sensor will send high frequency microwaves in an area and will check for their reflected patterns.  If the reflected pattern is
changing continuously then it assumes that there is occupancy and the lighting load connected is turned on.  As those microwaves can pass
through non-metallic objects it allows for discrete mounting behind luminaire diffusers providing convenient energy efficient lighting controls as well as providing occupants with a pleasant and safe environment.

In addition to individually controlled luminaires, Orbik can also configure master slave sensors to provide cost effective multiple sensor options for applications such as corridors and walkways.  By incorporating a wireless version it is possible to eliminate the need for interconnecting communication cabling allowing the client a cost effective way of providing lighting controls in retrofit, such as across multiple floors on stairways.

Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI)
DALI is a versatile system for complete lighting control.  It uses data communication between devices to provide users with total control over the lighting in their premises.  The common platform of DALI enables equipment from different manufacturers to be connected together.

DALI is a comprehensive lighting system which can be incorporated into many BMS (Building Management systems) including LonWorks® and KNX.  Orbik is able to accommodate the necessary DALI control gear in a large proportion of the luminaires we currently manufacture.

Digital Serial Interface (DSI)
Providing a digital signal from the controller to compatible devices in the luminaire, it is possible to provide dimming accurately down to 1%.  There are also a number of control devices available for presence detection which can be programmed to provide a wide range of functionally when used in conjunction with DSI control gear.

Phase Dimming (Leading / Trailing Edge)
Orbik can provide controls to allow the dimming of luminaires using conventional triac/thyristor dimmers to replace conventional lighting with a more cost-effective alternative whilst removing the need for expensive lighting controls.

Switch Control
Also referred to as switchDIM or touchDIM, this utilises reactive switches to allow simple dimming and on/off control of the luminaire.

Analogue Control (1 to 10V)
Using a dc Voltage on the control lines, it is possible to control the luminaire light levels.  Presence detectors that provide a 1-10V signal for control are also available.

Benefits of Lighting Controls
  • Reduction in energy costs.  Lighting controls, even low cost simple controls, can contribute up to 20% reduction in the energy cost of the lighting.
  • Safety and Security.  We have all seen or even used external security lighting. Now this can extend to the internal areas of a building, providing comfort and reassurance when entering unfamiliar surroundings, such as covered car parks or offices.
  • Health.  Research shows that the correct lighting can contribute to improved recovery from illness and in education can contribute to higher pupil achievements.
  • Productivity.  Better and customised lighting increases employee productivity in its purest form, with greater outputs against man hours as well as increased productivity as a result of a pleasant working environment.
  • Human Centric Lighting.  The use of lighting to enhance or even correct circadian rhythms in humans.  The use of lighting controls to provide varying CCT can prevent disruption to circadian rhythms and avoid associated health problems.
